Massage

The sense of touch is the massage therapist’s main avenue used to affect another being and is the body’s main method of gathering information about itself.  In contrast, an artist uses the sense of vision, and a musician uses the sense of hearing to communicate with others. Touching can affect us physiologically, cognitively, psychologically and emotionally.

Deep Tissue Therapeutic Massage (with Emily)

Deep tissue massage is a type of massage therapy that focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. It is especially helpful for chronically tense and contracted areas such as stiff necks, low back tightness, and sore shoulders.  Some of the same strokes are used as Therapeutic massage, but the movement is slower and the pressure is deeper and concentrated on areas of tension and pain.  Deep tissue massage works by physically breaking down the tense and contracted areas to relieve pain and restore normal movement. To do this, the massage therapist often uses direct deep pressure or friction applied across the grain of the muscles.

A study in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that people’s blood pressure fell after a single 45 to 60 minute deep tissue massage. Additionally, a 2010 meta-analysis in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry found that massage modalities like deep tissue, reduce stress hormone levels and heart rate while boosting mood and relaxation by triggering the release of oxytocin and serotonin.

Deep tissue massage usually focuses on a specific problem, such as:

  • Chronic pain
  • Limited mobility
  • Recovery from injuries (e.g. whiplash, falls, sports injury)
  • Repetitive strain injury, such as carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Postural problems
  • Osteoarthritis pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Muscle tension or spasm

This massage is also great for golfers, runners, and sports enthusiasts!

Swedish Relaxation Massage

As an ever-increasing part of many medical therapies, massage therapy has proven beneficial for many chronic conditions, including fatigue, high blood pressure, back pain, arthritis, depression, insomnia, digestive disorders, anxiety and more.  Massage also helps relieve the stress and tension of everyday life that can lead to illness and disease.  Therapeutic Table Massage Therapy at Blue Sky Yoga is performed on a massage table, the disrobed client covered by a sheet, with only the area being worked on exposed.  It incorporates Swedish, and Trigger Point Massage to stimulate circulation, and relieve knots and chronic muscle tension in deeper seated muscles and the fascia.  A combination of techniques is used, with the application of lotion to reduce friction on the skin.  Benefits of Therapeutic Massage include stress reduction, and relief of muscular tensions, soreness and pain.  The intent of this treatment is to calm the nervous system and begin the process of flushing toxins and waste from the body and to create an atmosphere of healing for the mind and body.
